Outcomes

Find out what we mean by the word outcome and what outcomes we will be judging your service against.

We use the word outcome to describe the impact of your service on the person using it. We want to understand the experience of people who are using your service.

The national minimum standards (NMS) set out desired outcomes for each of the standards.

For example, for care homes for older people there is a standard about information (standard 1).

If the service meets this standard, the outcome for the person using the service is defined as:

"Prospective service users have the information they need to make an informed choice about where to live."

The standards are grouped into outcome headings, which highlight aspects of individuals’ lives identified as most important to people who use services.

The outcomes vary slightly depending on the type of service.

The outcomes groups for care homes for older people are:

  • Choice of home
  • Health and personal care
  • Daily life and social activities
  • Complaints and protection
  • Environment
  • Staffing
  • Management and administration.

We will look at how well you are meeting the standards we think are the most important for your service at the time of inspection.

We call these key standards.

We will make a judgement for each outcome heading, not individual standards.

The range of judgements is:

  • poor
  • adequate
  • good
  • excellent.

The judgements we make will determine your quality rating.
