Performance ratings for adult social services in England 2008
27 November 2008
Good news for people who qualify for council-arranged or
council-funded social care: Services have improved for the sixth
year running.
That's the picture given by our annual
star ratings for councils, published today.
Key findings
Overall, our report finds that there are:
- no councils with a zero-rated service
- 19 councils with one star
- 75 with two stars
- 56 with three stars
Councils that have improved this year focussed
on the things that really matter to people, such as:
- helping people regain independence
- preventing avoidable hospital admissions through better
care services
- giving people more choice and control about their care
However, our recent Cutting the cake fairly report highlights that
there are problems with how people qualify for council-funded
help. Those excluded by the system are often left to struggle
on with little or no help at all.
Our chief inspector Paul Snell said:
"There is a great deal of good work going on
in local councils around England. People who do qualify for care
are getting better services.
“This year’s ratings show that in many
councils people are better served because of strong management and
leadership, and a political commitment to social care.”
